Syrian patriarchs call for peace, reject foreign intervention

Three Christian patriarchs living in Syria have issued a joint statement appealing for peace in the country and urging a rejection of any foreign intervention.
The message from the three patriarchs closely followed an earlier statement released by the Assembly of the Catholic Hierarchy in Syria. Both statements expressed concern about the continued unrest in the country, and sympathy for those who have already suffered. The prelates urged both the government and opposition to eschew violence, while taking a stand against “all foreign intervention of any kind and from any origin.”
The three patriarchs who subscribed to the statement were Melkite Catholic Patriarch Gregorios III, Syrian Orthodox Ignatius Zakka I, and Greek Orthodox Ignatius IV. All three bear the title of Patriarch of Antioch, and maintain their current sees in Damascus.
